Welcome to
Boy Scout Troop 274

Troop 274, formed in 1969, is Avon’s only Boy Scout Troop. It is primarily composed of Avon residents but includes families from surrounding towns. Throughout our history we have had strong youth membership and broad support from the families. Due to this strong support, Troop 274 remains one of the largest Troops in our District.

The adult leaders for our Troop have solid scouting experience and have helped to build a program that is varied in its activities and strong in its commitment to the development of responsible young men. In 2017, the Troop recognized its one hundredth Eagle Scout.  Hundreds of boys throughout the history of Troop 274 have contributed to our reputation as a fun, hard-working and award-winning Troop.

What is Scouting

Scouting is about adventure, learning, challenge, responsibility and leadership. While scouts are gathering and practicing these important life skills, they also have fun! This objective of scouting is consistent with Lord Robert Baden-Powell’s direction that scouting is “a game with a purpose.”

Unique Opportunities

The Scout program has structure that allows new scouts to learn from more experienced scouts and provides rewards in the form of rank advancement and merit badges. Scouts typically take on leadership assignments within the first two years and rotate into increasingly more responsible positions. Troop activities are varied with many opportunities for individual strengths to be recognized. In a community with highly visible competitive sports and many other outlets, scouting adds balance to the middle school and high school years.

Building Leaders

Membership in Scouting is open to all who wish to live by the Scout Law. Participation in Cub Scouts is excellent preparation for the adventure that is found in Avon’s Troop but is not a prerequisite.

In designing the Troop 274 program we believe that what ultimately matters when our Scouts become adults is not whether they can use a map and compass, but whether they can offer leadership to others in tough situations; and can live by a code that centers on honest, honorable, and ethical behavior.

A Special Thanks

Troop 274 is a highly successful, active Scout program. For this, we give thanks to our scouts, their families, our adult leaders and volunteers and the strong support we get from the Avon community.
